The night the lanterns turn orange: meet the Halloween Lanternlings

Six limited-edition Lanternlings are here for Halloween, one from every habitat. Here's their story, and how to find them before 2 November.

A 70 seconds story, narrated, with captions on by default.

The story

Once a year, on the last nights of October, something odd happens in Lanternwild. Every lantern in the land, from the mossy lamps of Mossglen to the lighthouse on the Tidepool shore, slowly begins to glow orange.

Nobody is quite sure why. The old Keepers say it's the season turning. Glenfang says it's the moon. The Lanternlings themselves are fairly sure it's the pumpkins showing off, because the pumpkins always look very pleased with themselves at this time of year.

Whatever the reason, orange lantern light does something special. It wakes up a few Lanternlings who are only ever seen at Halloween. They come out of pumpkins and cauldrons, drift down from the moon and float up from the rock pools, and for a few days they join in with everything: the walks, the dioramas, the swaps and, most of all, the parties.

Then, as November arrives and the lanterns fade back to gold, they wander off again until next year. Anyone who found one gets to keep it, of course. A Halloween Lanternling never forgets who welcomed it in.
